Averil Jean Coxhead is a professor of applied linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. She is best known for developing the Academic Word List, a compilation of 570 English word families that appear frequently across a wide range of academic texts. This resource has become widely used in English language teaching and learning, particularly for students preparing for academic study. Beyond the Academic Word List, Coxhead has applied her expertise in linguistics to create specialized wordlists for specific communities and purposes. She has developed vocabulary lists for rugby terminology used by referees and players, and has created building-related wordlists designed for Tongan tradespeople. This work demonstrates her commitment to making linguistic resources accessible and relevant to diverse groups.
