Bjørnstjerne Martinius Bjørnson was a Norwegian writer who became the first Norwegian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1903. The Nobel Committee honored him "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit." Bjørnson was a prolific polemicist and held considerable influence in Norwegian public life and broader Scandinavian cultural debate. He is regarded as one of the four greatest figures in Norwegian literature, alongside Henrik Ibsen, Jonas Lie, and Alexander Kielland. Beyond his literary work, Bjørnson is celebrated for writing the lyrics to the Norwegian national anthem, "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" (Yes, we love this country). His writing inspired musical compositions by other artists, including works by Fredrikke Waaler and Anna Teichmüller.
