Edward Bibbins Aveling was an English comparative anatomist and botanist who became a popular spokesman for Darwinian evolution, atheism, and socialism during his lifetime. Beyond his scientific work, he pursued a diverse career as a journalist, editor, playwright, actor, short story writer, and poet. Aveling authored scientific works alongside numerous literary and political pamphlets, many published by The Freethought Publishing Company. He is perhaps best known for his popular work The Student's Darwin, published in 1881 as part of the company's 'International Freethought and Science' series. This work helped make evolutionary theory accessible to general readers. In addition to his original writing, Aveling undertook significant translation work, including the first volume of Karl Marx's Das Kapital and Friedrich Engels' Socialism: Utopian and Scientific. These translations helped introduce major socialist texts to English-speaking audiences.
