Gérard de Nerval was the pen name of Gérard Labrunie, a French writer of poetry and prose, essayist, and translator. He was a major figure during the era of French romanticism and is best known for his novellas and poems, particularly the collection Les Filles du feu, which included the novella Sylvie and the poem "El Desdichado". Through his translation work, Nerval played a significant role in introducing French readers to German Romantic literature. He translated works by major authors including Klopstock, Schiller, Bürger, and Goethe, helping to shape French literary tastes during the Romantic period. Nerval's later work merged poetry and journalism within a fictional framework, an approach that would influence later writers such as Marcel Proust. His final novella, Aurélia ou le rêve et la vie, proved particularly influential on André Breton and the development of Surrealism.
