Gotthold Ephraim Lessing

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was a German philosopher, dramatist, publicist, and art critic who played a central role in the Enlightenment movement. His contributions to literature and drama were substantial, with his plays and theoretical writings significantly influencing the development of German literary tradition. Lessing is widely recognized by theatre historians as the first dramaturg, a role he held at Abel Seyler's Hamburg National Theatre. His work in this position was groundbreaking, and he is credited with establishing the field of dramaturgy itself. The term "dramaturgy" first appeared in his work Hamburg Dramaturgy, which became foundational to the discipline.
