Hugh Thomson was an Irish illustrator renowned for his distinctive pen-and-ink illustrations. He became best known for his work illustrating classic literary texts by major authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. Thomson is credited with inaugurating the Cranford School of illustration through his illustrations for the 1891 Macmillan reissue of Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford, a publication that helped define a particular aesthetic approach to book illustration during that period.
