John Robinson Pierce was an American electrical engineer and author with a broad range of interests spanning both technical and creative fields. He conducted extensive work in radio communication, microwave technology, computer music, and psychoacoustics throughout his professional career. Beyond his engineering work, Pierce was also an accomplished science fiction writer, publishing under the names John Pierce, John R. Pierce, and J. J. Coupling. Pierce was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and pursued advanced education at Caltech, where he earned his PhD. His combination of rigorous technical training and creative interests allowed him to contribute to multiple disciplines. He died in Sunnyvale, California, from complications of Parkinson's Disease.
