Julius West was a historian, poet, and translator born in Saint Petersburg in 1891. He prepared a Fabian Tract examining John Stuart Mill and wrote a critical study of G. K. Chesterton. Among his translation work, he rendered Chekhov into English, contributing to the availability of Russian literature in the English-speaking world. West traveled to Russia during the 1917 revolution, where he witnessed significant historical events firsthand, including speeches by Lenin and Trotsky. His historical interests extended to the Chartist movement, and he produced a history of Chartism that was published after his death in 1918.
