Montesquieu

Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, was a French jurist, historian, and political philosopher who lived from 1689 to 1755. Born at the Château de la Brède in Gironde, he spent much of his life developing ideas that would significantly influence political thought in Europe and beyond. Montesquieu's career spanned the early to mid-18th century, a period of considerable intellectual ferment in France. His work as a jurist and historian informed his broader philosophical inquiries into the nature of law, society, and political systems. He died in Paris in 1755, leaving behind a body of work that continued to shape political discourse long after his death.
