Peter Singer

Peter Singer is an Australian moral philosopher and Emeritus Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at Princeton University. Born in Melbourne in 1946, Singer has spent most of his career developing and applying utilitarian philosophy to real-world ethical problems. Singer's work is distinguished by its secular, utilitarian approach to applied ethics. He is widely known for his 1975 book Animal Liberation, which argues for veganism and has become influential in animal rights philosophy. Another significant contribution is his essay "Famine, Affluence, and Morality," which contends that there is a moral imperative for wealthy individuals to donate resources to help alleviate global poverty. For most of his career, Singer worked within the framework of preference utilitarianism. However, in 2014, he co-authored The Point of View of the Universe with Katarzyna de Lazari-Radek, in which he revealed that he had shifted to hedonistic utilitarianism.
