Stuart Pratt Sherman was an American literary critic, educator, and journalist active in the early twentieth century. He is perhaps best known for his philosophical feud with H. L. Mencken, a fellow critic and contemporary. Though the two men were close in age and their careers have sometimes been compared by scholars, they maintained notably different critical perspectives that led to their well-documented disagreements. Sherman lived from 1881 to 1926. While Mencken would go on to have a longer career, outliving Sherman by three decades, both men were influential voices in American literary criticism during their overlapping years.
