Tahar Ben Jelloun is a Moroccan writer born in Fez in 1944. Although Darija is his first language, he writes his literary works in French. He rose to international prominence with his 1985 novel L'Enfant de sable, which brought him widespread recognition. Ben Jelloun has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
