Tove Jansson

Tove Marika Jansson was born in 1914 in Helsingborg, Sweden, and grew up in a creative household. Her mother worked as an illustrator and postage stamp designer, while her father was a sculptor. This artistic environment shaped her early development and interests. Jansson studied art from 1930 to 1938, training in Helsinki, Stockholm, and Paris. She held her first solo art exhibition in 1943. Alongside her visual art practice, she wrote short stories and articles for publication, and created illustrations for book covers, advertisements, and postcards. Throughout her life, Jansson maintained parallel careers as both an artist and writer, working across multiple disciplines including novels, comic strips, painting, and illustration. She continued this multifaceted creative work until her death in Helsinki in 2001.
