Truman W. Williams

Truman W. "True" Williams was an American artist best known for his extensive work illustrating Mark Twain's books and novels. He illustrated the first edition of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876, making him the first artist to visually portray iconic characters such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. His illustrations helped define the visual identity of these now-classic characters. Beyond his work with Twain, Williams served as the sole illustrator of Sketches, New and Old and was the primary illustrator for Roughing It and The Innocents Abroad. He was a prolific contributor to American literature, working with numerous publishers and illustrating works by other notable writers of his era, including Bill Nye, George W. Peck, and Joaquin Miller. Despite his significant contributions to American letters, Williams struggled with alcoholism, which affected both his productivity and reliability as an illustrator throughout his career.
