Vladimir Grigoryevich Chertkov was one of the editors of Leo Tolstoy's works and among the most prominent followers of Tolstoy's philosophy and teachings. He was instrumental in preserving and publishing Tolstoy's literary legacy. Following the Russian revolutions of 1917, Chertkov played a key role in creating the United Council of Religious Communities and Groups. This organization eventually came to administer the Russian SFSR's conscientious objection program, reflecting Chertkov's commitment to Tolstoyan principles including non-violence and religious freedom.
