Will James

William Roderick James was a Canadian-American artist and writer who became known for his depictions of the American West. He gained prominence as an author of cowboy stories for both adults and children, establishing himself as a significant voice in Western literature. James is best remembered for writing Smoky the Cowhorse, a work that earned him the Newbery Medal in 1927. This achievement marked a high point in his literary career and remains his most celebrated contribution to American letters. Beyond his writing, James was an accomplished visual artist whose work centered on cowboy and rodeo scenes. His artistic style followed in the tradition of Charles Russell, another prominent Western artist. Much of his artwork was used to illustrate his own books, creating a cohesive body of work that combined his talents as both writer and illustrator. In recognition of his contributions to Western culture and art, James was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in 1992.
