William Harrison Ainsworth was born in 1805 in Manchester, England. He initially trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession did not appeal to him. While completing his legal studies in London, he met John Ebers, a publisher and manager of the King's Theatre in Haymarket, who would prove instrumental in shaping his career. Through Ebers, Ainsworth gained access to literary and dramatic circles in London. Ebers also introduced him to his daughter, whom Ainsworth married. This connection marked a turning point in Ainsworth's life, as he moved away from law and toward the literary world. Ainsworth became known as a historical novelist, establishing himself as a significant figure in English literature during the nineteenth century. He lived until 1882, dying in Reigate, Surrey.
