The fourth International Workshop on Active Inference convenes in Ghent, Belgium during September 2023. Thirty-four research teams submit their work, but only seventeen papers make it through the rigorous selection process. The accepted studies span six critical areas: robotics applications, decision-making frameworks, psychological foundations, practical implementation strategies, representation learning methods, and theoretical advances in learning and inference. Each paper represents months or years of investigation into how biological and artificial systems can actively engage with their environments to reduce uncertainty and optimize behavior. The collection reveals how active inference bridges neuroscience, artificial intelligence, robotics, and cognitive psychology, offering new approaches to understanding perception, action, and learning across disciplines.
