Cara Rutledge needs rental income to save her husband Brett's ecotourism boat business, so she rents her Isle of Palms beach house to Heather Wyatt for the summer. Heather, a young artist commissioned to paint birds for postage stamps, seeks quiet space to work with her pet canaries. The arrangement works until tragedy strikes Cara's life and she desperately wants to return to her beach house sanctuary. Heather refuses to leave her newfound refuge. The two women become unlikely roommates, starting as strangers but learning to depend on each other as their worlds crumble. Meanwhile, the coastal shorebirds and a man who rescues them draw Heather from her protective shell toward adventure and possible love. Like the migrating birds that visit the island each summer, both women must discover their inner strength to take flight in unexpected ways.
