The young man tells a confused story about an attack in a citrus grove outside the city. He might have killed someone. His girlfriend and dog have vanished. Easy wants to refuse the case, but he recognizes the veteran's war damage and takes him on. Meanwhile, Feather's white uncle arrives unannounced at Easy's home. Easy's adopted daughter sees a family reunion, but Easy suspects darker motives that could shatter his heart. The detective navigates a California populated by hippies and tycoons, radicals and criminals.
