Part of The Infernal Devices
First published 2011
Tessa Gray thought she had found refuge among the Shadowhunters in Victorian London's Institute. Her safety crumbles when enemies within the Clave move to remove Charlotte from leadership. Without Charlotte's protection, Tessa becomes vulnerable to the Magister, who covets her supernatural abilities for his own purposes. The Magister wages personal war against the Shadowhunters, seeking revenge for an old tragedy that destroyed his life. Tessa joins Will and Jem on a perilous quest that takes them from Yorkshire's foggy moors to London's poorest districts. They uncover disturbing truths about Tessa's origins at a sinister manor house and an otherworldly ball. A clockwork demon delivers an ominous message to Will, revealing that the Magister tracks their movements through a traitor in their ranks. Tessa's feelings grow stronger for the devoted Jem, yet she cannot escape her attraction to the tormented Will. As Will's emotional barriers begin to fall, Tessa wonders if defeating the Magister might free them all from their secrets and reveal her true destiny.
