Twelve-year-old Eva Root makes her living as a traveling fraud. She performs fake séances across the country, convincing grieving families that she can speak to their dead relatives. Eva knows the voices are all pretend. Then something changes. A real voice appears in her mind, urging her to travel to Chicago's World's Fair. At the Fair, Eva encounters a magician who claims he can make real magic happen. He wants Eva's help with his ambitious project. Eva agrees to work with him, drawn by the possibility of genuine supernatural power. But as their collaboration deepens, she starts to question his true intentions. The magician's goals may be far from innocent. When disaster strikes, Eva must venture beyond the world of the living to discover what the magician really plans to do.
