Sookie Stackhouse serves drinks at a bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana. Her telepathic abilities make dating difficult since most men find mind reading unsettling. Vampires prove easier company because their thoughts stay hidden from her gift. One night she discovers Eric, a powerful vampire she knows, wandering naked and confused on a country road. His memory has vanished completely, leaving him vulnerable and sweet instead of his usual intimidating self. Sookie takes him in, recognizing the dangerous Eric beneath his current helpless state. Someone has stolen his memories through magic, and that same enemy now wants him dead. Sookie must protect this gentler version of Eric while figuring out who attacked him and why. The situation grows more complicated as she finds herself drawn to this softer side of the normally frightening vampire. Her feelings become tangled between the Eric she knows and this temporary version who needs her care.
