by Nathan Harris

First published 2013

After an exhausting day, the number 8 falls into such a deep sleep that he doesn't wake up for four entire days. While 8 remains unconscious, his numerical friends 5, 6, 7, and 9 embark on a series of exciting adventures without him. The group visits the park and enjoys a lakeside picnic. They try their hand at fishing, catch a movie, and share pizza together. Their fun continues with a trip to the beach and culminates in attending the Kids Rock concert. When 8 finally awakens after his marathon slumber, he discovers what he has missed during his absence. His reaction to learning about all the activities that happened without him reveals his disappointment at being left out of the fun. Harris crafts a story that works on multiple levels, engaging young readers learning to count while providing entertainment for the adults reading along.
