Lise Adams travels to Equatoria, a continent on the new world that the Hypotheticals created to support human life beyond the Arch. She seeks answers about her father, who disappeared ten years ago and may have connections to the Martians. Turk Findley, a former sailor, has come to Equatoria hoping to build a fresh life. When ash begins falling from the sky, Turk and Lise find themselves thrown together as strange events unfold around them. The ash rain appears linked to the Hypotheticals in ways they cannot yet understand. As they work to solve the mysteries confronting them, they must also evade a specialized group that hunts the Fourths and Martians. The hospitable new planet grows increasingly alien and threatening. Lise and Turk struggle to survive while uncovering the truth about this world created by unknown forces.
