Eva Trout lives with her former teacher Iseult Arbles and Iseult's husband Eric in their Worcestershire home. The young orphan has never quite fit into their household despite their care. Her legal guardian Constantine stays in London, believing Eva has settled well with the Arbles family. Eva's restless and romantic temperament drives her to plan a dramatic departure. She decides to sell her Jaguar and vanish completely, hoping to start fresh somewhere new. Her scheme goes awry when she accidentally creates evidence of her movements. The paper trail she leaves behind alerts Constantine and the Arbles to her plans. As her various guardians begin to track her down, Eva finds herself in deeper complications than she anticipated.
