Finer Noble Gases

First published 2005

Chase and Staples sit catatonic on their sofa in their East Village apartment, popping pills and staring at their television until it breaks. The two former members of a band once called "Lester's Surprise" need their electronic fix. They hatch a plan to lure their strange neighbor upstairs so Staples can sneak down the fire escape and steal his Magnavox. Chase spins tales to keep the neighbor distracted while Staples makes his move. But their scheme triggers a series of bizarre arrivals and increasingly surreal events that spiral from comedy into something much darker. As these electronic age casualties drift through their numbed existence, they desperately seek any sensation that might make them feel alive again. They want to connect with something larger than themselves, to find purpose in their pharmaceutical haze. The theft becomes just the beginning of a descent into an absurdist nightmare where bodily fluids spill, violence erupts, and the line between reality and drug-addled hallucination blurs completely.
