Jack Ryan Jr is enjoying a vacation in Barcelona when he spots an old friend at a local café. Renee Moore acts strangely during their brief encounter, seeming both surprised and distracted when she sees him. They arrange to meet later, but Jack never gets the chance. Minutes after he leaves, a suicide bomber destroys the café. Jack rushes back into the wreckage to help Renee, but she dies in his arms after whispering a single word: "Sammler." When Spanish police arrive, they treat Jack as a suspect until a Spanish Intelligence Service agent intervenes and calls them off. This odd turn of events pushes the Campus operative to investigate why Renee was killed. His search reveals that his old friend kept dangerous secrets, some of which may have led to her death. Jack has always risen to meet difficult challenges, but this enemy might prove too powerful for him to face alone.
