Jack Taylor splits his time between visiting the man he put in a coma and caring for Trip, a small dog left to him by a deceased nun. The Vatican sends an envoy to his door with a request. They want Jack to convince Father Kevin Whelan to abandon his ties to Edge, a clandestine organization of Galway's elite who eliminate criminals the law cannot touch. Jack agrees to the mission, but Father Whelan turns up dead the following morning, suspended by a rope in his garden. Someone is systematically killing Edge members, and the Vatican fears worse forces will fill the power vacuum. Jack must identify the killer before Edge collapses entirely and Galway descends into disorder. The whiskey-drinking former police officer navigates between his connections to Ireland's clergy and the city's most influential citizens. As bodies accumulate, Jack faces a deadly opponent willing to challenge Galway's most feared organization.
