A magazine employee receives a letter from Birdie Maxwell, a sweet young girl who has written in with wishes. The magazine runs an annual wish fulfillment column, but it won't start again for months. She decides to grant some of Birdie's wishes herself, thinking it's harmless. She continues anonymously helping the girl until one day she goes too far. While fulfilling another wish, she catches sight of Birdie's father. He's devastatingly handsome and single. She knows she should stop playing fairy godmother right then. She should walk away and leave things alone. But she can't help herself. Something about this connection to Birdie makes her act without thinking. She ends up showing up at their doorstep in person. What started as innocent letter writing becomes something much more complicated when real feelings enter the picture.
