Heroes Are My Weakness

First published 2014

Annie Hewitt clutches her red suitcases as she steps off the boat onto Peregrine Island in the middle of a brutal snowstorm. The suitcases contain her puppet show characters: sensible Dilly, spunky Scamp, and Leo the villain. These puppets are all she has left after her acting career collapsed, forcing her to perform children's shows to survive. Annie heads for Moonraker Cottage, but she discovers that the man living in the looming Harp House above is someone from her past who betrayed her as a teenager in a way she cannot forgive. Now they are both trapped on the frozen island with a lonely widow, a silent little girl, and meddling townspeople. He writes horror novels and knows countless ways to kill his characters. She makes audiences laugh with her puppet performances. Annie must decide whether he remains the villain she remembers or if he has truly changed. Her rational mind says no, but her heart whispers yes.
