Hercule Poirot receives an unusual request through his secretary Miss Lemon. An elderly woman has written asking for the detective's assistance with an unspecified matter. Five days pass before Poirot can respond to her plea. When he finally decides to visit, he discovers the woman has died suddenly. Her family sends word that his services are no longer required. Poirot finds this dismissal suspicious and travels to investigate anyway, pretending he never received their message. The timing troubles him. Why would an old woman seek his help, then die so quickly afterward? Poirot must determine whether her death was natural or the result of something more sinister. His instincts tell him foul play may be involved, but he needs evidence to prove his suspicions correct.
