How Lucky

First published 2021

Daniel sits on his front porch in Athens, Georgia, watching the world go by. A childhood illness left him unable to speak or walk, confining him to a wheelchair and mostly to his home. Between shifts answering complaints for a regional airline, he observes his neighborhood from his window. One young woman walks past so regularly that Daniel expects to see her each day. Then he witnesses something that changes everything: he believes he sees her being taken against her will. Daniel faces an impossible situation. His physical limitations make it nearly impossible to communicate what he saw or take action. Yet he cannot ignore what happened to the woman whose routine had become part of his own daily life. As Daniel struggles to make others understand what he witnessed, he must navigate a world not built for someone with his disabilities while racing against time to help solve a mystery unfolding in his own neighborhood.
