Christian Starkmann came back from Vietnam, but his boyhood friend Bonny George did not. The two had grown up together in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, roaming the wilderness, hunting and fishing. They served in the same platoon in Vietnam, where Bonny George died and was buried. Now Christian tries to build a normal life. He marries June, a social worker with a good heart.
