Mike Finnegan lies broken on a desert highway north of the Mexican border after a speeding vehicle launches him into the sand. Against all odds, he walks away from what should have been fatal injuries and finds himself recovering in a hospital bed in Buenavista, a small border town where few questions get asked. But Finnegan's brush with death has left him changed. From his hospital room, he begins to perceive events unfolding far beyond what his eyes can see, as if the accident tore open some barrier between him and the hidden currents of the world. As he pieces together what happened to him and why, Finnegan discovers that his survival may not have been the miracle it appeared to be. The desert keeps its secrets, but the border between life and death has become permeable for a man who should not be alive.
