Workers at the papal palace in Avignon make a startling discovery. Behind a sealed wall lies an ossuary containing bones that bear distinctive marks in the feet and wrists, alongside carvings of a cross and lamb. Bill Brockton, a forensic anthropologist from the United States, arrives to examine the remains. He determines the bones are approximately two thousand years old. When his team reconstructs a face from the skull, the results show remarkable similarity to the image on the Shroud of Turin. The research proceeds under strict secrecy. Religious fanatics learn of the find and begin proclaiming an approaching apocalypse.
