Mary Anne adores her kitten Tigger. When he fails to come home one afternoon, she feels worried but not panicked. By the next morning, with Tigger still nowhere to be found, Mary Anne's concern turns to desperation. She calls an emergency meeting of the Baby-sitters Club. The girls decide to offer a reward and begin searching the neighborhood systematically. They check under porches, in garages, and behind bushes. Despite their thorough efforts, Tigger remains missing. Then Mary Anne discovers a disturbing letter in her mailbox. Someone claims to have taken Tigger and demands one hundred dollars for his safe return. Mary Anne faces a terrible dilemma. She cannot tell if this is a cruel prank by someone who knows about her missing pet or if Tigger has actually been stolen. The mystery deepens as Mary Anne must decide whether to trust the letter writer and somehow find the money, or risk never seeing her beloved kitten again.
