When plants and animals on the island of Starns mysteriously start dying, the residents send an urgent call for help to Winding Circle temple. Prickly green mage Rosethorn and young stone mage Evvy answer the call, along with a nervous initiate and a sentient rock being. As they investigate the island's problems, Evvy is pulled into a massive bubble of molten rock, discovering that an ancient, dormant volcano is stirring. With time running out, the group must use their magic and wits to evacuate the island's inhabitants before the volcano erupts and destroys everything.
