Midnight on the Sea Beach

by J. S. Scott

First published 2016

Mike sits on his dorm room floor in mid-October, listening to his housemates plan another camping trip. He's a sophomore who prefers quiet to chaos, but he goes anyway. Zoey goes too. She's also a sophomore, also someone who doesn't need the noise to have a good time. The group reaches the lake cottage and the party starts immediately. Music blares from portable speakers. Students drink and dance around the fire. Mike watches Zoey try to enjoy herself, but he can see she's as overwhelmed as he is. He takes her hand and leads her away from the crowd, down to the water's edge. They walk along the beach until the music fades behind them. Mike finds a large rock and sits down, pulling Zoey onto his lap. She turns to face him. Their lips meet. Their arms wrap around each other. The fall night wraps around them both. Away from everyone else, they discover something new between them.
