Mountain Born

by Elizabeth Yates

First published 2005

Peter lives on a mountain farm where wolves prowl and weather threatens the flock. His mentor is Benj, an experienced shepherd who teaches him the ancient skills of tending sheep. When a black lamb arrives, Benj shows Peter how to raise the spirited creature as his own special pet. Peter names her Biddy and watches her grow from a playful cosset into the strong leader of the entire flock. Through seasons of danger and discovery, Peter masters the shepherd's craft alongside his trusty dog. The mountain tests them with storms and predators, but Peter finds deep satisfaction in protecting his animals. As Biddy takes her place guiding the other sheep, Peter discovers his own path in life. The bond between boy and lamb mirrors his growing connection to the land and its rhythms.
