Sayre and her twin brother Charley step off the train in Wyoming with their father and younger sister. They expect to find the homestead their Chicago friend promised them. Instead, they discover lies and half-truths that leave their family stranded on unfamiliar land. The local power broker, Mr. Hoskins, blocks their efforts at every turn. Sayre refuses to give up. She studies the soil, learns about crops, and fights to understand what farming demands. Her brother and father struggle with the harsh reality of their situation. The family must decide whether to retreat to Chicago or push forward into an uncertain future. Sayre believes she can master the skills needed to make their farm succeed, but the land and its people test her determination daily.
