Omar Victor Diop transforms his Dakar studio into a stage for reimagining Black African history. The contemporary photographer creates vivid, saturated portraits that bring historical figures back to life through careful costume and composition. His lens captures both individual portraits and self-portraits that bridge centuries of African diaspora experience. Three major projects anchor this collection: Diaspora from 2014, Liberty from 2017, and Allegory from 2021. Each series positions Diop within the lineage of legendary African studio photographers Malick Sedibé and Seydou Keita while carving out distinctly modern territory. His conceptual approach layers past and present, using his own body and those of his subjects to embody forgotten or overlooked figures from Black history. The art world has celebrated Diop's work since 2012 for its ability to make historical narratives visceral and immediate through photography's power to collapse time.
