Pondwader stands apart from his fishing village in ancient Florida. At fifteen, his white hair, pink eyes, and pale skin mark him as the White Lightning Boy, the first born in generations. The villagers fear him because legends say a Lightning Boy will make the moon hide and stars fall, bringing winds of destruction. They arrange his marriage to Musselwhite, a warrior woman who has no use for what she sees as a weak youth. Musselwhite faces her own crisis when an old enemy captures her husband and threatens to destroy her. She cannot understand what value this gentle boy brings to her desperate situation. She does not yet know that Pondwader possesses supernatural abilities. He hears voices carried on the wind that warn of terrible events approaching their world.
