Part of Meg Langslow, book 93

First published 2026

Meg Langslow finally gets back to her blacksmithing when her father calls with an urgent request. Can she help with the horses at Ragnar's place? Their friend Ragnar Ragnarsen is transforming his estate into a genuine moated castle, and he's agreed to shelter nearly fifty horses from Hoof and Hearth, an equine rescue group. The horses lost their previous home when the farm owner died without a will. His older son Abel wants the horses to stay, but younger brother George plans to sell to developers. George may have hired someone to threaten the animals and force the rescue group out. Meg and her family camp in Ragnar's barn to watch over the horses. They wake to find the suspected thug murdered. George has an alibi, but Abel doesn't. Neither do the fiery founder of Hoof and Hearth or the former jockey who runs their stable operations. Meg works to protect the horses while helping the police chief investigate the killing. She hopes the murderer won't turn out to be one of the horse rescuers she's grown to admire.
