Ramona Quimby turns eight just as everything in her world shifts. Her father enrolls in college while her mother starts a new job. Ramona gets to ride the school bus alone and attend a different school with an unfamiliar teacher. After classes end, she must spend time at Grandmother Kemp's house with annoying little Willa Jean until her moody sister Beezus picks her up. The family's new routine creates challenges for everyone. Ramona discovers that being eight means more than just getting older. She must handle bigger problems and help her family in ways she never had to before. When the moment comes, Ramona gets her opportunity to show that the Quimbys can count on her.
