The protagonist moves to a new house with Ma, leaving behind the safety of their old home where Ma promised no monsters lurked anywhere. Ma had insisted their previous house contained no dark places and nothing frightening hid behind doors, in wardrobes, or under beds. But this new house operates by different rules. When the protagonist explores beneath the new bed, they discover Shadow. This encounter marks the beginning of a relationship that will test everything Ma taught about fear and darkness. The story follows what happens when a child must navigate a world where the old reassurances no longer apply and Shadow becomes a presence that cannot be explained away.
