Hercule Poirot dismisses the sensational crimes Captain Hastings shows him from the newspapers. A bank clerk named Davis has stolen fifty thousand pounds in securities. A man has committed suicide. A typist has disappeared. None of these cases interest the Belgian detective. Then Mrs. Todd arrives at his door with a different sort of problem. Her cook, Eliza Dunn, walked out of the house in Clapham two days earlier without giving proper notice. The middle-aged woman sent for her trunk but has not contacted her employer since. Mrs. Todd insists Poirot investigate this domestic mystery. Challenged to prove his methods work on any case, Poirot accepts what appears to be a trivial matter. He must discover why an ordinary cook would abandon her position so abruptly and what her sudden departure really means.
