Bob Howard faces promotion at the Laundry, Britain's secret government agency that protects the realm from occult threats. His heroic fieldwork has earned recognition, but he discovers the agency uses external contractors for delicate operations. The Laundry assigns Bob to investigate American televangelist Ray Schiller, whose excessive interest in the British Prime Minister raises alarms. Bob must work alongside two freelance agents, Persephone Hazard and Johnny McTavish, while ensuring they avoid creating an international incident. When Bob arrives in the United States, he confronts a supernatural threat that may exceed even the Laundry's cleanup capabilities. The mission forces Bob to navigate both diplomatic sensitivities and otherworldly dangers that could destabilize relations between nations.
