The Bodies Left Behind

by Jeffery Deaver

First published 2008

Detective McKenzie receives an abruptly cut phone call from a Wisconsin country house. She leaves her son and friend behind to investigate the remote property. McKenzie discovers two victims shot execution style in the head. The killers remain on the scene and immediately attack her. They strip away her weapon, phone, and vehicle. McKenzie escapes into the surrounding forest with a woman who survived the massacre. She cannot abandon this witness to certain death. The murderers hunt both women like animals through the dense woods. Exhaustion weighs on them as terror mounts with each step. McKenzie realizes her police training means nothing in this wilderness. The killers know the terrain and move closer. Her radio stays silent and rescue seems impossible. McKenzie must rely solely on her survival instincts to keep them both alive through the night.
