The Deep

by Helen Dunmore

First published 2009

Sapphire moves between two realms. She walks Cornwall's rocky coastline on land. Beneath the waves, she swims alongside Faro, her Mer companion. Both worlds face destruction. Deep in the ocean trenches where even the Mer fear to venture, the Kraken awakens. This ancient creature possesses strength enough to destroy Ingo and tear the land apart. Only Sapphire can reach these depths because of her mixed heritage. A whale becomes her guide on this descent. She must travel to places where sunlight never penetrates. There she will face a darkness more complete than the lightless deep. The fate of both her worlds depends on this confrontation with an evil that threatens everything she knows.
